When we think of God’s favor, we often envision grand gestures—promotions, financial breakthroughs, miraculous healings, or life-changing opportunities. While these are undoubtedly manifestations of His favor, many of us overlook the everyday blessings and "little things" that reveal His love, care, and presence in our lives.
God’s favor is not always about the big, dramatic events. It’s also found in the subtle, quiet moments that remind us He is with us and for us. Today, let’s take a closer look at how we can learn to recognize and appreciate God’s favor in the little things.
What Are the Little Things?
The little things are the blessings we often take for granted or might not immediately associate with God’s favor. These could include:
Waking up in the morning with good health.
A kind word from a stranger or friend.
Safety on a commute.
A gentle breeze on a hot day.
A meal shared with loved ones.
Finding something you lost.
A sudden burst of inspiration or creativity.
These moments may not seem extraordinary, but they are reminders that God is involved in every detail of our lives. He delights in blessing us, not just with the monumental, but with the mundane.
Scriptural Examples of God’s Favor in the Little Things
The Bible is full of examples of God’s favor in what might seem like small, everyday occurrences:
Elijah and the Ravens (1 Kings 17:2-6) When Elijah was hiding in the wilderness, God sent ravens to bring him bread and meat twice a day. This small but miraculous provision sustained Elijah during a time of great need. God’s favor was evident not in abundance, but in the simple, consistent provision of food.
Ruth and Boaz (Ruth 2:15-16) Ruth found favor with Boaz, who instructed his workers to leave extra grain for her to glean. This act of kindness may have seemed small at the time, but it was a sign of God’s provision and led to Ruth becoming part of the lineage of Jesus.
The Widow’s Oil (2 Kings 4:1-7) When a widow was about to lose her sons to creditors, God’s favor came in the form of a small jar of oil that never ran out. This seemingly insignificant resource became a life-saving blessing.
Jesus Feeding the Multitudes (John 6:1-14) With just five loaves and two fish, Jesus fed over 5,000 people. What seemed small and insufficient became more than enough when placed in the hands of God.
Learning to Recognize the Little Things
So how can we become more aware of God’s favor in the little things? It starts with shifting our perspective and opening our hearts to gratitude.
Practice Gratitude: Gratitude is the lens through which we see God’s favor more clearly. When we intentionally thank God for what we have—even the small things—we begin to notice how much He is doing in our lives.
Start a gratitude journal and write down three small blessings each day. Over time, you’ll see just how much God has been providing for you.
Pay Attention: Our lives are often so busy that we miss the little moments of God’s favor. Take time to slow down and reflect.
Did someone let you cut in line at the store today?
Did you avoid a traffic jam on your way to work?
Did you hear a song that uplifted your spirit?
These may seem like coincidences, but they are often God’s way of showing He is with you.
Ask for Open Eyes: Pray for God to open your eyes to His favor in your daily life. Psalm 119:18 says, “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.” Ask Him to help you see the blessings you might otherwise overlook.
Celebrate the Ordinary: The world often teaches us to wait for "big moments" to celebrate. But God’s favor is evident even in the most ordinary days. Learn to celebrate the simple joys—a delicious cup of coffee, the sound of laughter, or a sunset. These are gifts from God.
Why the Little Things Matter
It’s easy to dismiss the little things as unimportant, but they play a significant role in our relationship with God and our understanding of His character.
They Build Our Faith: When we see God’s hand in the little things, our faith grows. We start to trust that if He cares about the small details, He will also take care of the big challenges.
They Remind Us of His Presence: The little blessings are constant reminders that God is with us. Psalm 139:3 says, “You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.” The God who notices every detail of our lives is always present, even in the smallest moments.
They Teach Us Contentment: Recognizing God’s favor in the little things helps us cultivate contentment. Instead of always striving for more, we learn to appreciate what we have and trust God’s provision for the future.
They Inspire Us to Be a Blessing: When we recognize and appreciate the little things God does for us, we’re inspired to do the same for others. A kind word, a small gift, or an act of service can be a channel of God’s favor for someone else.
My Personal Experience with the Little Things
In my own life, I’ve seen God’s favor in countless small ways. There have been times when I’ve prayed about something minor—like finding a lost item or needing encouragement—and God has answered almost immediately. I’ve had moments where a kind word from someone changed my entire day or where I avoided a potential problem without realizing it until later.
Even when I don’t have as much as I used to monetarily, I’ve learned to see God’s favor in the small ways He provides. A friend might unexpectedly bless me, a bill might be less than I anticipated, or an opportunity to give back to someone else opens up. These moments remind me that God is always working, even in the details.
Scriptures to Encourage You
Here are some scriptures that highlight God’s attention to the little things in our lives:
“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God.” – Luke 12:6 (God cares even for the smallest creatures, so how much more does He care for us?)
“The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” – Psalm 121:8 (God is watching over every moment of your life.)
“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” – James 1:17 (All the little blessings are gifts from God.)
Challenge for This Week
This week, I challenge you to take time to notice the little things God is doing in your life. Each day, write down three small blessings you experienced, and thank God for them. By the end of the week, you’ll be amazed at how much He’s been providing and showing His favor.
