Today, I’m reflecting on the incredible blessing of being surrounded by people who have encouraged and nurtured my love of reading, especially reading about superheroes. From my childhood to today, I’ve had real-life heroes who fueled my imagination, helped me develop my morals, and inspired my creativity. These individuals have shown me the importance of storytelling and heroism, both in fiction and in life.
Among those heroes are my parents, my wife, my extended family, and a very special woman, Mrs. Rethel Miller, the owner of Comics Universe in Jackson, TN. They have played a significant role in shaping my love for superheroes and storytelling. Through them, I’ve learned the value of imagination, empathy, resilience, and the power of light over darkness.
The Heroes in My Life
It all started with my mom, who loved superheroes and shared that love with my sister and me. She made sure we had access to books by taking us to the library regularly, especially during summer reading programs. Those trips were magical, sparking a lifelong love of reading and exploration.
My parents supported my love of superheroes in every way possible. My dad would surprise me with comic books from time to time, and both my parents bought me superhero action figures from franchises like He-Man, ThunderCats, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and the Super Powers Collection. These toys and stories were more than entertainment—they were lessons in courage, responsibility, and hope.
Beyond my parents, my aunts, cousins, wife, and other loved ones also encouraged my passion. They supported my fascination with superheroes and storytelling, which eventually led me to create my own superhero universe in S.O.L.A.D.™: Soldiers of Light Against Darkness™.
Mrs. Rethel Miller and Comics Universe
Another real-life hero in my life is Mrs. Rethel Howell Miller, the owner of Comics Universe in Jackson, TN. Mrs. Miller is one of the kindest, most patient, and most supportive people I know. Her store is more than just a place to buy comics—it’s a safe haven and a hub of joy for countless fans of superheroes.
For over 30 years, Mrs. Miller has fostered a love for reading and superheroes in West Tennessee and beyond. Together with her late husband, Carl Smith “Smittie” Miller, Mrs. Miller founded Comics Universe after recognizing the growing interest in comic books. Their journey began when a family trip to Memphis inspired them to create a space where fans could find their favorite stories and collectibles. Originally running a martial arts store, the Millers transitioned to selling comics and built an iconic establishment that has become a cornerstone of the Jackson community.
When Carl passed away in 1996, Mrs. Miller carried on their dream with courage and determination. For over two decades, she single-handedly managed Comics Universe, greeting customers like family and nurturing the love for superheroes in the area. Her dedication earned her recognition in television features, and newspaper articles and magazines.
Mrs. Miller also hosts Free Comic Book Day every first Saturday of May and annual Black Friday sales, where back-issue comic books are just $1.00 each. These events bring joy to families and encourage new generations to fall in love with superheroes. I’ve had the honor of helping Mrs. Miller and her family during these special events, witnessing firsthand the impact she has on the community.

Lessons Taught by Superheroes
The fictional heroes I’ve read about and watched have taught me so much about life. Superheroes aren’t just characters in stories—they’re symbols of hope, resilience, and morality. Here are some of the valuable lessons I’ve learned from some of my favorite heroes:
1. Superman: Always Do the Right Thing
Superman shows us the importance of using our gifts to help others. His unwavering commitment to truth and justice reminds us that doing the right thing may not always be easy, but it’s always worth it.

2. Batman: Overcoming Adversity
Batman’s story is a testament to resilience. Despite the tragedy of losing his parents, Bruce Wayne channels his pain into a mission to fight injustice. He teaches us to rise above our circumstances and use our resources to make the world a better place.

3. Spider-Man: Responsibility Comes with Power
The iconic line, “With great power comes great responsibility,” defines Spider-Man’s journey. He reminds us that our talents and abilities are meant to serve others and that even heroes face struggles but keep moving forward.

4. Wonder Woman: Compassion and Strength
Wonder Woman embodies the balance of compassion and strength. She teaches us that kindness is a powerful tool for building a better world and that standing firm in our beliefs can lead to lasting change.

5. The X-Men: Embracing Diversity
The X-Men’s stories often tackle themes of prejudice, acceptance, and the strength of unity. They inspire us to celebrate diversity and stand against hatred and injustice, reminding us that differences make us stronger.

6. The Incredible Hulk: Managing Emotions
The Hulk’s story is a reminder that emotions, even the overwhelming ones, don’t define us. Bruce Banner’s struggle to control his anger encourages us to seek balance and channel our feelings into positive actions.

7. Spawn: Redemption
Spawn’s journey is about redemption and second chances. Despite his dark past, he fights for what’s right, reminding us that our mistakes don’t define us and that it’s never too late to change.

8. Batgirl: Resilience and Reinvention
Barbara Gordon’s transformation from Batgirl to Oracle after a life-altering injury shows us the power of resilience. She teaches us to adapt, reinvent ourselves, and find new ways to make a difference.

9. Storm: Leadership and Courage
As a leader of the X-Men, Storm exemplifies strength, wisdom, and grace. Her ability to inspire and lead through adversity reminds us to rise above challenges and be a light for others.

10. Angelo and Angeline: Light in the Darkness
In my own series, S.O.L.A.D.™: Soldiers of Light Against Darkness™, Angelo and Angeline represent faith, courage, and the fight against evil. They remind us that no matter how dark the world may seem, there is always light. Their journey inspires us to stand firm in our faith and use our gifts to make a positive impact.
