Reap What You Sow Mondays with Tony: Sowing the Seeds of Strength – Honoring Women’s History

Writer: Tyrone Tony Reed Jr.Tyrone Tony Reed Jr.

As we step into the 3rd day of Women’s History Month, we take time to reflect on the seeds of strength, courage, and resilience that women have sown throughout history. The impact of women’s contributions—whether in leadership, education, faith, science, activism, or the arts—cannot be overstated. Women have been planters of wisdom, cultivators of change, and nurturers of faith—ensuring that the next generation reaps a harvest of opportunity, progress, and strength.

Women have been the unseen architects of history, often working behind the scenes while shaping families, communities, and even nations. From the prayers of grandmothers to the voices of women on the front lines of justice, every act of faith and courage is a seed planted for future generations.

Proverbs 31:16 (NKJV)

"She considers a field and buys it; from her profits she plants a vineyard."

This verse reflects the wisdom, vision, and leadership of women, showing that they are not just caretakers but builders, strategists, and cultivators of success.

Let’s explore how the principles of sowing and reaping apply to women’s history, and how we can continue to plant seeds of progress for future generations.

Sowing the Seeds of Women’s Empowerment

Women have planted seeds in some of the most difficult soil—facing barriers, discrimination, and resistance, yet continuing to press forward in faith.

📖 Galatians 6:9 (NKJV)"And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart."

Because of the boldness and sacrifices of women in history, today we enjoy greater opportunities, rights, and representation. But our work is not done—we must continue to water the seeds they planted to ensure the next generation flourishes.

1. The Seed of Leadership – Women Who Led and Transformed Society

Women have led nations, movements, businesses, and communities—often defying societal expectations and breaking barriers. Their leadership is visionary, compassionate, and powerful.

  • Madam C.J. Walker became the first Black female millionaire, proving that entrepreneurship and leadership could transform not only an individual’s life but entire communities by creating jobs and opportunities.

  • Fannie Lou Hamer co-founded the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, fighting for Black voting rights and declaring, “I am sick and tired of being sick and tired.”

  • Ellen Johnson Sirleaf made history as Africa’s first female head of state, serving as the President of Liberia from 2006 to 2018, leading her country through post-war recovery.

📖 Judges 4:4 (NKJV)"Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, was judging Israel at that time."

Just like Deborah, these women used their strength, wisdom, and determination to lead their people toward a better future.

🔹 Reflection: Are we empowering women in leadership today? Do we uplift their voices, support their businesses, and encourage their influence?

2. The Seed of Education – Women Who Opened Doors of Learning

Women have been educators, scholars, and pioneers, ensuring that knowledge is passed down and expanded.

  • Mary McLeod Bethune founded a school for Black children that later became Bethune-Cookman University, ensuring access to education.

  • Malala Yousafzai survived an attack on her life and continues to fight for girls' education worldwide.

  • Dr. Mae Jemison became the first Black woman astronaut, proving that education and STEM careers are for all people.

  • Charlotte E. Ray became the first Black woman lawyer in the U.S., opening doors for women in law.

📖 Proverbs 4:7 (NKJV)"Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding."

Education is a seed that multiplies, ensuring that knowledge and wisdom spread across generations.

🔹 Reflection: Are we supporting women in education? Are we encouraging young girls to seek wisdom, pursue learning, and break barriers in their fields?

3. The Seed of Faith – Women Who Built Spiritual Legacies

Faith has been the foundation of women’s resilience, carrying generations through trials and triumphs.

  • Esther used her position as queen to save her people from destruction.

  • Harriet Tubman relied on God’s guidance to escape slavery and lead others to freedom.

  • Coretta Scott King carried on Dr. King’s legacy, ensuring that faith and justice remained intertwined.

📖 Proverbs 31:30 (NKJV)"Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised."

🔹 Reflection: Are we sowing seeds of faith in the women around us? Are we encouraging them to rely on God’s strength, wisdom, and promises?

4. The Seed of Justice and Advocacy – Women Who Fought for Change

Women have led civil rights, social justice, and equality movements, ensuring that the world became more just and fair for all.

  • Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat, igniting the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

  • Ida B. Wells documented racial injustices and fought against lynching.

  • Ruth Bader Ginsburg helped pave the way for women’s legal rights.

📖 Micah 6:8 (NKJV)"He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?"

🔹 Reflection: Are we continuing the fight for justice? Are we standing up for fairness, equality, and righteousness?

How Do We Continue Sowing Seeds for Future Generations?

  • Mentor young women and help them navigate life’s challenges.

  • Support women-owned businesses and creative works.

  • Speak up for justice when you see inequality.

  • Encourage faith and wisdom in the women around you.

📖 Esther 4:14 (NKJV)"Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?"
