From the earliest days of oppression to the ongoing fight for equality, faith has been an essential foundation for the Black community. The resilience of our ancestors was not simply a matter of survival—it was a divine act of courage, strengthened by their unwavering trust in God.
Hebrews 10:23 (NKJV) reminds us, “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.” Faith has been the lifeline that sustained our people, giving them the courage to overcome trials and build a legacy of strength.
Examples of Resilient Faith in Black History:
Sojourner Truth – A preacher and abolitionist whose faith fueled her fight for justice and equality.
Frederick Douglass – A man who saw the hypocrisy of slavery through the lens of his Christian beliefs and worked to expose the truth.
Harriet Tubman – Known for saying, “I always told God, ‘I’m going to hold steady on You, and You’ve got to see me through,’” as she led enslaved people to freedom.
The Black Church – A pillar of hope, activism, and spiritual nourishment that empowered entire communities to resist oppression and seek justice.
Faith has also manifested in the everyday perseverance of Black families. It is found in the quiet prayers of mothers for their children, the strength of fathers working tirelessly to provide, and the unity of communities that support one another in times of hardship.
