Tony’s Soldiers of Light Sundays: The Strength of a Woman – Biblical and Modern-Day Women Who Overcame

Writer: Tyrone Tony Reed Jr.Tyrone Tony Reed Jr.

Today marks the 9th day of Women’s History Month, a time dedicated to recognizing the invaluable contributions of women throughout history. Women have been pillars of strength, resilience, and faith, overcoming obstacles while standing firm in God’s promises. From the Bible to modern history, women of faith have played a pivotal role in shaping families, communities, and nations. Their stories of faith, perseverance, and triumph continue to inspire generations, reminding us that true strength comes from trusting in the Lord.

Women of Strength in the Bible

God has always used women to fulfill His divine plan, showing that strength is not just physical but deeply rooted in faith, perseverance, and trust in Him. Proverbs 31:25 (NKJV) says, “She is clothed with strength and honor, and she shall rejoice in time to come.”

Throughout the Bible, we see women who faced great trials yet remained faithful, proving that God equips those He calls. Their courage, wisdom, and faith set an example for women today.

Ruth: A Story of Loyalty and Faith

Ruth was a widow in a foreign land, yet she refused to abandon her mother-in-law, Naomi. Her words in Ruth 1:16, “Where you go, I will go… your God will be my God,” reflect a commitment to faith and perseverance. Despite hardship, Ruth’s faith led her to Boaz, and she became an ancestor of Jesus, showing that God rewards those who trust Him.

Ruth’s story teaches us the power of steadfast faith. Even when she had nothing, she chose to believe that God had a plan. Her obedience and humility led to blessings beyond her imagination.

Hagar: The God Who Sees

Hagar was cast out into the wilderness with her son, feeling abandoned and hopeless. But God appeared to her, promising that her son Ishmael would become a great nation (Genesis 16:13). She called Him El Roi, “the God who sees me,” showing that even when the world rejects us, God never abandons us.

Hagar’s story is one of endurance and divine provision. She was a woman who felt invisible, yet God saw her, proving that even in our lowest moments, God’s eyes are upon us, leading us to hope and restoration.

Mary Magdalene: A Woman Transformed by Grace

Once possessed by demons, Mary Magdalene was healed by Jesus and became one of His most devoted followers. She was the first to witness the resurrection (John 20:11-18), proving that God uses those the world rejects to proclaim His greatest victories.

Mary’s story is a reminder that no one is beyond redemption. Her transformation from brokenness to becoming a witness of Christ’s resurrection is a testament to the power of God’s grace.

Modern Women of Strength Who Overcame

Women of faith throughout history have changed the world by trusting in God and persevering against all odds. Their stories continue to inspire us to stand firm, move forward, and trust in God’s promises.

Harriet Tubman: The Moses of Her People

Harriet Tubman escaped slavery but didn’t stop there. She risked her life countless times, returning to lead others to freedom through the Underground Railroad. Tubman credited prayer and divine guidance for her success, saying, “I always told God, ‘I’m going to hold steady on You, and You’ve got to see me through.’”

Her unwavering faith and courage allowed her to be a light in the darkness for so many. Her story is one of obedience, bravery, and total reliance on God.

Sojourner Truth: A Voice for the Voiceless

Born into slavery, Sojourner Truth became a powerful abolitionist and preacher, advocating for both racial and gender equality. Her famous speech, “Ain’t I a Woman?”, challenged societal norms, and she remained faithful in God’s justice, declaring, “God will take care of the poor trampled-down ones.”

Sojourner’s life reminds us that faith empowers us to speak out against injustice. She used her voice to bring truth to light, showing that God calls His people to stand for righteousness.

Viola Davis: Breaking Barriers Through Faith

Viola Davis, an award-winning actress, grew up in extreme poverty and faced many hardships, yet she never lost sight of her faith and purpose. She often speaks about how prayer and trusting God’s timing helped her rise to success. Her story is a reminder that God can turn any struggle into a testimony.

Sarah Jakes Roberts: A Story of Redemption

Sarah Jakes Roberts, daughter of Bishop T.D. Jakes, had a child at 14 and faced deep struggles, yet she didn’t let her past define her. Through faith and perseverance, she became a powerful speaker, author, and leader, showing that God restores and uses our brokenness for His glory.

Michelle Obama: Leading with Grace and Purpose

As First Lady, Michelle Obama inspired millions with her advocacy, strength, and resilience. She often speaks about how faith has been her foundation, guiding her through challenges and leadership. She reminds women everywhere that faith fuels purpose and impact.

Lessons from Women of Strength

  1. Faith Transforms Struggles into Testimonies – Ruth, Mary Magdalene, and Harriet Tubman all overcame adversity because they trusted in God’s plan.

  2. God Sees and Redeems the Rejected – Hagar and Sarah Jakes Roberts show us that God meets us in our lowest moments and gives us a future.

  3. Strength Comes from Trusting God’s Timing – Viola Davis and Michelle Obama remind us that waiting on the Lord produces lasting impact.
