Tony’s Soldiers of Light Sundays: Walking by Faith, Not by Sight

Life often presents us with paths that are shrouded in uncertainty. As believers, we are called to navigate these paths not through what we see or understand but through a profound trust in God—faith. Walking by faith and not by sight, as instructed in 2 Corinthians 5:7, is both a challenge and a privilege. It requires surrender, courage, and the belief that God’s plan is greater than our understanding.

Understanding Faith Beyond Sight

The apostle Paul’s declaration, “For we walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7, NKJV), serves as a cornerstone of Christian living. This statement is an invitation to trust in God’s promises even when they seem distant or unclear. Faith goes beyond what is tangible; it anchors us in the unseen reality of God’s sovereignty, love, and purpose.

To walk by faith is to live in a way that reflects an eternal perspective. It means trusting God even when circumstances appear bleak, holding onto His promises despite the storms of life.

Biblical Examples of Walking by Faith

Abraham’s Journey of Trust:

Abraham’s story exemplifies faith in action. God called him to leave his home and go to a land He would show him (Genesis 12:1-4). Abraham obeyed without knowing the destination, trusting God to lead the way. His faith was further tested when God promised him a son in his old age and asked him to sacrifice Isaac—the very son of promise. Abraham’s unwavering faith allowed him to witness God’s provision and faithfulness.

Moses Leading Israel:

Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt and through the Red Sea, trusting God’s power to deliver them. When faced with Pharaoh’s army behind and the sea ahead, Moses obeyed God’s command to stretch out his hand, parting the waters. This act of faith not only saved the Israelites but also displayed God’s mighty hand (Exodus 14).

Peter Walking on Water:

In Matthew 14:29-31, Peter stepped out of the boat and walked on water toward Jesus. His faith enabled him to do the impossible—until he looked at the waves and began to sink. This moment reminds us that faith requires focus on Jesus, not the challenges around us.

The Woman with the Issue of Blood:

In Mark 5:25-34, a woman who had suffered for 12 years with a bleeding condition displayed extraordinary faith. She believed that if she could just touch the hem of Jesus’s garment, she would be healed. Her faith made her whole, demonstrating that even a small step of trust can lead to miraculous transformation.

Jairus’s Daughter:

Jairus, a synagogue leader, showed great faith when he sought Jesus to heal his dying daughter (Mark 5:21-43). Even when told she had died, Jairus trusted Jesus. Jesus’s words, “Don’t be afraid; just believe,” carried Jairus through to the moment Jesus raised his daughter, proving that faith triumphs over fear.

The Boy’s Lunch That Fed the Multitude:

In John 6:1-14, a young boy offered his modest lunch of five loaves and two fish to Jesus, who used it to feed over 5,000 people. The boy’s act of faith—believing that his small offering could make a difference—demonstrates that God can use even the smallest acts of trust for His glory.

Why Faith Matters

Faith is not passive:

It is active trust in God that moves us forward, even when the outcome is unclear. Walking by faith does not eliminate fear but overcomes it through reliance on God’s power and promises.

Faith as a Shield:

Ephesians 6:16 calls faith a shield that extinguishes the fiery darts of the enemy. When doubt, fear, or discouragement attack, faith deflects them, reminding us of God’s truth.

Faith Produces Growth:

James 1:3-4 teaches that the testing of faith produces perseverance, making us mature and complete. Challenges that require faith often lead to spiritual growth and a deeper relationship with God.

Faith Pleases God:

Hebrews 11:6 declares, “Without faith it is impossible to please God.” Faith is the foundation of our relationship with Him, reflecting our trust and dependence on His goodness.

How to Strengthen Your Walk of Faith

  1. Immerse Yourself in God’s Word:

Romans 10:17 says, “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Regularly reading and meditating on Scripture strengthens your faith and aligns your heart with God’s will.

  2. Pray Without Ceasing:

Prayer keeps you connected to God and helps you align your desires with His. It is an act of faith that demonstrates trust in His power and plan.

  3. Surround Yourself with Faith-Building Community:

Fellowship with other believers provides encouragement and accountability. Hearing testimonies of God’s faithfulness inspires confidence in His promises.

  4. Step Out in Obedience:

Faith grows when exercised. Take steps of obedience, trusting God to guide and provide even when the path is unclear.

Walk By Faith

Walking by faith, not by sight, is a journey of trust, obedience, and reliance on God’s promises. It is the daily choice to focus on His presence rather than the challenges around us. As you navigate the week ahead, remember the words of Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV): “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
