Today marks the 23rd day of Black History Month, a time to celebrate the resilience, contributions, and faith of Black Americans who have shaped history. While many figures stand out, it is undeniable that Black women of faith have been the backbone of progress, justice, and spiritual endurance. From the church pews to the streets of activism, from the halls of government to the classrooms of future generations, these women have embodied strength, wisdom, and unwavering belief in God.
Women of Faith: Lights in the Darkness
Throughout history, God has called women to stand as pillars of faith and leadership. Proverbs 31:25 (NKJV) describes them well: “She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future.” Black women have long carried the burdens of their families, communities, and movements with a faith that has not wavered.
These women have prayed over their children, led congregations in worship, fought for justice, and passed down spiritual wisdom. Their legacy shines brightly, lighting the path for future generations to follow.
Black Women of Faith Who Shaped History
Harriet Tubman – Called “Moses,” she trusted in God’s direction as she led hundreds to freedom on the Underground Railroad.
Sojourner Truth – A preacher and abolitionist who used her voice to fight for equality and justice.
Ida B. Wells – A journalist who exposed racial injustices and advocated for civil rights, all while being a devout Christian.
Fannie Lou Hamer – A bold activist who fought for voting rights, declaring, “I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired,” but always leaned on prayer and Scripture.
Coretta Scott King – The wife of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who carried on his legacy and used faith as her foundation for activism.
Shirley Chisholm – The first Black woman elected to Congress, who famously said she was “unbought and unbossed” while advocating for justice.
Maya Angelou – A poet and storyteller whose words inspired faith, hope, and perseverance.
Marian Anderson – A world-renowned singer who broke racial barriers and leaned on her faith through adversity.
Each of these women stood firm in their faith and made an undeniable impact on history.
What We Can Learn from Their Faith
Faith Requires Action – These women did not just pray; they moved in faith. They worked, fought, and sacrificed to make a difference.
Courage Comes from God – When fear threatened them, they turned to God for strength.
The Next Generation Depends on Us – They paved the way so that we could continue their work and inspire the future.
Their faith reminds us that when God calls us to stand, we must stand boldly, trusting that He will provide the strength to carry us through.
Faith and Strength in S.O.L.A.D.™
In S.O.L.A.D.™: Soldiers of Light Against Darkness™, Juanita Grayson (Angeline) represents the faith and resilience of Black women throughout history. Like the great women before her, she must trust in God’s plan and stand firm in spiritual and physical battles. She is a leader, a warrior, and a woman who refuses to back down in the face of darkness.
Her journey mirrors that of Harriet Tubman, Coretta Scott King, and Fannie Lou Hamer—women who walked by faith and not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7, NKJV). Juanita's story is a tribute to the unbreakable spirit of Black women of faith.
A Call to Action: Honoring Their Legacy
