Tony's Timeless Thursdays: Jem and the Holograms

“Truly outrageous!” For me and many others, Jem and the Holograms wasn’t just a cartoon—it was an electrifying blend of music, fashion, and adventure that redefined animated storytelling in the 1980s. Watching it with my female cousins was a treasured part of my childhood. While they loved the glitz and glamour, I saw it as a superhero show wrapped in a pop music phenomenon. With its compelling storylines, advanced technology, secret identities, and themes of family and teamwork, Jem stood out as a show that had something for everyone.

Premise and Storylines

The story of Jem and the Holograms centers on Jerrica Benton, a young woman balancing her responsibilities as the co-owner of Starlight Music and the Starlight Foundation for foster girls. Her life takes an extraordinary turn when she discovers Synergy, a cutting-edge holographic computer her father secretly built. Using Synergy’s incredible abilities, Jerrica adopts the glamorous alter ego of Jem, the lead singer of the all-girl rock band, Jem and the Holograms.

From there, the show takes us on a whirlwind of adventures. Jem and the Holograms use their fame and talents to help others while fending off the schemes of their rivals, The Misfits, and later The Stingers. Each episode was packed with drama, music, and life lessons, exploring themes like friendship, family, and standing up against greed and corruption.

Cast of Characters

The rich array of characters made Jem truly unforgettable:

  • Jerrica Benton/Jem: (speaking voice by Samantha Newark, singing voice recorded by Britta Phillips and Joelle Dunn for the second intro theme song and [4] portrayed by Aubrey Peeples in the live-action film), Jerrica is a dual-life heroine. As Jem, she leads the band while keeping her true identity a secret, even from her boyfriend, Rio (a Brazillian-Greek, voiced by Michael Sheehan).

  • The Holograms:

    • Kimber Benton: (voiced by Cathianne Blore, voice recorded by Florence Warner and portrayed by Stefanie Scott in the live-action film) Jerrica’s fiery-haired sister and the band’s keyboardist and songwriter.

    • Aja Leith: (voiced by Cathianne Blore and portrayed by Hayley Kiyoko in the live-action film) The group’s Asian-American mechanical whiz and lead guitarist with a cool blue aesthetic.

    • Shana Elmsford: (voiced by Cindy McGee and portrayed by Aurora Perrineau in the live-action film) The African-American, specifically Jamaican American drummer and fashion designer whose creativity shines both on stage and off.

    • Carmen "Raya" Alonso: (voiced by Linda Dangcil) Introduced later as the band’s new Mexican American drummer, adding another layer of diversity and talent.

  • Synergy: (voiced by Marlene Aragon), Synergy is the holographic computer that makes everything possible, from Jem’s persona to the band’s dazzling stage effects.

  • The Misfits: The quintessential antagonists, led by the brash Pizzazz Phyllis "Pizzazz" Gabor (a Hungarian-American, with speaking voice by Patricia Alice Albrecht, singing voice recorded by Ellen Bernfeld and portrayed by Kesha in the live-action film), with Roxanne "Roxy" Pelligrini (an Italian-American, with speaking voice by Samantha Paris, credited as Bobbie Block, singing voice recorded by Ellen Bernfeld and portrayed by Hana Mae Lee as an Italian-Korean in the live-action film) Mary "Stormer" Phillips (speaking voice by Susan Blu, singing voice recorded by Lani Groves and portrayed by Katie Findlay in the live-action film), and Sheila "Jetta" Burns (voiced by Louise Dorsey and portrayed by Eiza González in the live-action film, in the comics she is African British, however, in the movie, her British heritage is non-existent, instead, she is Mexican-American,) providing plenty of trouble for Jem and the Holograms.

The Iconic Theme Song

The theme song of Jem and the Holograms was a defining element of the show, setting the tone with its high-energy beat and empowering lyrics. It wasn’t just catchy—it encapsulated the heart and soul of the series. The opening lines immediately captured the imagination of viewers:

“Jem is excitement! / Ooh, Jem! / Jem is adventure! / Ooh, Glamour and glitter, fashion and fame!”

These lyrics perfectly encapsulated what made Jem special. It was a show about adventure and excitement, with just the right mix of glamour and substance. The chorus was equally unforgettable:

“Jem, Jem is truly outrageous / Truly, truly, truly outrageous / Whoa-oh-Jem! / The music’s contagious, outrageous!”

The words “truly outrageous” became synonymous with the show, reflecting its boldness and flair. For fans like me, hearing this theme instantly brought back memories of excitement, anticipation, and wonder. It was more than a theme—it was an anthem celebrating individuality, creativity, and courage.

The music and lyrics inspired not just the characters in the series but also the viewers, creating a sense of empowerment and confidence that lingered long after the episode ended. It set the stage for a story about overcoming challenges, standing out, and using your unique talents to make a difference.

Why the Theme Song Still Matters

Even decades later, the Jem theme song remains an iconic piece of 1980s pop culture. Its infectious energy and uplifting message resonate with fans of all ages. The song represents the essence of the show: fun, fearless, and full of heart. Today, the lyrics serve as a nostalgic reminder of a time when Saturday mornings were filled with adventure, music, and truly outrageous storytelling.

The Music

The music of Jem and the Holograms was the show’s heartbeat, featuring catchy, original songs that felt like they belonged on the radio. Each episode included multiple songs, often with vibrant music video-style sequences that advanced the story or deepened character relationships. Songs like “Truly Outrageous” and “Only the Beginning” captured the show’s spirit, while The Misfits countered with rebellious anthems like “I’m Gonna Get You.”

The music wasn’t just entertainment—it was storytelling. It highlighted the emotions of the characters, adding layers of depth to the show’s drama.

Production and Collaboration

Jem was a powerhouse collaboration between Hasbro, Sunbow Productions, and Marvel Productions. Writer Christy Marx infused the series with depth, ensuring that its characters and storylines resonated beyond the surface-level glitz. Animation was handled by the legendary Toei Animation, giving the show its polished, dynamic look.

The series was also a marketing juggernaut, designed to promote a line of Jem dolls by Hasbro. This strategic partnership ensured the brand’s reach extended far beyond television, allowing fans to bring the world of Jem home.

Why It Was Special

For me, Jem was more than a cartoon—it was a glimpse into a world of adventure and empowerment. It had everything I loved: secret identities, cutting-edge technology (Synergy was like a superhero’s gadget!), compelling storylines, and relatable themes like helping others and building a family through love and friendship.

I admired how the show balanced exciting rivalries with heartfelt moments. The Starlight Foundation’s focus on foster children and adoption was particularly moving. It showed that family isn’t just about blood—it’s about the bonds we build and the care we give each other.

Watching Jem with my female cousins was always a joy. While they were enchanted by the fashion and music, I saw the deeper superhero parallels. The diversity of the cast also stood out, showing kids of all backgrounds that they could see themselves in these characters.

Cultural Impact and Legacy

"Jem and the Holograms" holds a special place in the pantheon of 1980s pop culture for several reasons:

  • Empowerment and "Girl Power":

Jem and the Holograms showcased strong, independent female characters who balanced their professional lives, personal relationships, and altruistic missions. At its core, the series celebrated "girl power," showing young viewers that women could be leaders, innovators, and heroes.

  • Diversity and Inclusion:

The show was groundbreaking in its portrayal of a diverse cast. Shana Elmsford was one of the few Black characters in 1980s animation, and Raya Alonso added Latina representation. These characters were depicted as talented, multifaceted individuals, breaking stereotypes and resonating with viewers from various backgrounds.

  • Themes of Friendship and Family:

At its heart, Jem and the Holograms was about the importance of relationships—both biological and chosen. The foster girls at the Starlight Foundation exemplified the idea that family is not just about blood but about love, support, and care.

  • Complex Villains:

The Misfits weren’t one-dimensional antagonists. They had their own motivations, ambitions, and even moments of vulnerability. Stormer, for instance, showed a softer, kinder side, providing nuance to the group’s dynamic.

  • Ahead of Its Time:

The show tackled issues like loyalty, integrity, and the consequences of greed, themes that are still relevant today. Episodes like “Out of the Past” delved into Jerrica and Kimber’s childhood, adding emotional depth and exploring topics like grief and legacy.

  • Music as a Storytelling Device:

The original songs weren’t just catchy; they were integral to the storytelling. Whether it was Jem inspiring hope with “Truly Outrageous” or The Misfits stirring up trouble with “Outta My Way,” the music amplified the emotional stakes of the episodes.

A Perfect Candidate for a Reboot

Imagine Jem with today’s technology! Synergy could harness augmented reality, and the music videos could incorporate cutting-edge effects. The show’s themes of diversity, empowerment, and self-expression are more important than ever, making it a perfect candidate for a modern revival.

Closing Thoughts
